Publish a Biography E-book and Make a Book Trailer Movie!

In this 2-week summer camp designed by Dr. Jiang Pu, students will learn to write and illustrate a biography book, publish it, and make a short book trailer movie. Camp Instructor: Oliver Chin

 

When: 7/12-7/23 (M-F)  1:00-2:00P.M. PST /4:00-5:00P.M. EST

  • Class description

    In this hands-on, highly interactive project-based learning summer class, students will: 

    • Research and write a socially conscious biography with their unique voice 
    • Draw illustrations or comics: character development, storyboard/plot, narrative arc, setting, dialog through panels, inking and coloring
    • Add audios, music, voiceover and dubbing   
    • Learn about the publishing process and publish the e-book
    • Read each other's books and give constructive feedback  
    • Learn about movie-making basics and create a stunning book trailer video 
    • Learn how to share the book trailer on social media for the book launch!  
  • Schedule

    Day 1  The art of biography writing; choose an AAPI hero

    Day 2-6  Research, Writing, Illustration or Comics

    Day 7-8 Reflection, Editing, Proofreading, Audio, E-book publishing, Storyboard for Video 

    Day 9-10 Book Trailer & Social Media

  • Camp Instructor

    Oliver Chin is a published author, comics expert, and publisher. He has recently published an exciting illustrated anthology Awesome Asian Americans: 20 Stars Who Made America Amazing. He has also published more than twenty children's picture books, including The Asian Hall of Fame series, the highly popular Tales from The Chinese Zodiac series (12 books), Julie Blackbelt series, and other books. His first books were a graphic novel on 9-11, and a sports commentary The Tao of Yao (《姚明之道》). 

    Oliver graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in 1991. His family lives in San Francisco, CA.

  • Notes

    Dr. Pu and Oliver Chin have hand-picked some of the best biographies as our mentor texts. The book list will be sent out to our students 1 month before the summer camp. APPs that will be used for making the E-books, comics, and videos will be shared before the camp. 

    A movie expert/artist will help teach the book trailer video-making part.
